The North Carolina Zoo’s commitment to wildlilfe extends far beyond its gates. A case in point is the Zoo’s work on behalf of the Cross River Gorilla, a unique species found only in the remote highlands of Nigeria and Cameroon. Dr. Richard Bergl, the Zoo’s Curator of Conservation and Research, has been working for the last ten years to learn more about this deeply endangered animal. Once considered extinct due to the impacts of habitat loss and hunting, the Cross River Gorilla now numbers about 300 individuals. Dr. Bergl, in conjunction with government agencies and other conservation organizations, has developed a research program designed to better understand what habitat remains for the species, and to understand how the species itself is distrubuted within that habitat. Using a variety of technologies, including satellite imagery and handheld computers, the Cross River Gorilla team is collecting valuable data that will be used to ensure the survival of the species far into the future.

February 17th, 2012 by Hunting Tree Stands

The 2011Guinness World Records book shows that Colo is the world’s oldest gorilla at 53 years old. She lives at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. She holds many more amazing records. On Wednesday, December 22, 2010 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM , the Columbus Zoo will celebrate Colo’s 54 birthday. Colo, who is also the world’s first gorilla born in captivity, is the first gorilla shown in this video. Colo just turned 53 and the zoo had a birthday celebration. She was born in 1956 and is the oldest known gorilla in the world. Colo is noted for the heart-shaped brow ridge above her eyes (She is not the gorilla shown in the still picture for this video). (Mumba, a wild born silverback male 1865, is the one with his lower lip hung open.) Colo has left many descendants including grandchildren Mac, Jumoke, Nik, & Cassie, and great grandmother of Jontu and Muchana. Colo was born on December 22, 1956 at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. She is a Western lowland gorilla, who was born to Millie (also known as Christina) and Baron Macombo (Mac for short) who were captured by “Gorilla Bill” Said, of Bexley, Ohio, in the area of Africa then known as French Cameroon. Millie and Mac arrived in New York on December 22, 1950, during a snowstorm and had no planned destination!! Mr. Said, called a friend, Columbus Zoo Superintendent Earl Davis, who agreed to take the gorillas in the emergency. Colo weighed just 3.75 lbs. and measured only 15 inches long, but she had a profound affect on world. Her birth allowed

Visiting a gorilla troop in Rwanda, the troop was being harassed by an outsider silverback gorilla, trying to steal one of the troop females. Here the outsider showed up while we were watching the troop silverback and several other members of the troop, and tried to make an impression by charging right through our party. The troop silverback seemed not to be impressed…

Saving a Baby Mountain Gorilla from a Poacher’s Snare

February 14th, 2012 by Hunting Tree Stands

The Gorilla Doctors of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project team up with Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers to rescue a baby mountain gorilla caught in a poacher’s snare in Mgahinga National Park. Gorilla Doctors Jan and Fred track the baby, who has a wire snare cutting through his leg and his mother Inshuti. Both baby and mother are darted with anesthesia so the snare can be safely removed and the wounds treated. UWA rangers and trackers make noise to keep the group’s 3 defensive silverbacks from harming the doctors. Despite a raging thunderstorm, the mission is a success and both mother and baby return safely to their group. www.gorilladoctors.org
