Gorilla Encounter

default Gorilla Encounter

In Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda, I was fascinated by the sight of two young mountain gorillas playing in the forest. I was so engrossed that I didn’t even notice the female until she brushed right past me. And then a few metres ahead I spotted the big Silverback. All in all a pretty breathtaking encounter!

Gorilla walks like a man – The Trailer

February 1st, 2012 by Hunting Tree Stands

The Gorilla who walks like a man! A gorilla at a British animal park has achieved fame for walking upright on his hind legs like a human. Ambam, a gorilla who resides at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in England, has become the latest animal internet superstar. His claim to fame is walking upright like a person, instead of using his arms. At 220 kilograms, Ambam is Port Lympne’s biggest gorilla. He was born at the park’s sister site, Howletts, in 1990. Walking gives Ambam a few advantages over his fellow gorillas. Primarily, he is able to see before any other gorilla when the food is about to arrive and where it might be in the pen. It also means that when it rains Ambam keeps his hands dry. Which might be handy should he need to sign a contract with a celebrity agent. Ambam, a Western lowland gorilla, was filmed strolling about his enclosure by animal researcher Johanna Watson. Ambam, a 21-year-old silverback, is part of a bachelor group of the critically endangered animals at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, which is run by an international conservation charity, The Aspinall Foundation. Gorilla keeper Phil Ridges said Ambam, who now weighs 485 pounds, had been hand-reared at another animal park when he was a one-year-old for several months because he was ill. Family trait? He said the human-like walking style seemed to run in the family. “Ambam’s father Bitam used to display the same behavior if he had handfuls of food to carry,” Ridges said in a statement. “Ambam also has a

Goodness, gracious it’s a baby boy gorilla

January 31st, 2012 by Hunting Tree Stands

default Goodness, gracious its a baby boy gorilla

It’s a boy! San Diego Zoo Safari Park learns its the newest gorilla in the troop is male and the first gorilla birth in 11 years. I spoke with Lead Keeper, Peggy Sexton and zoo visitors, The Baumann Family from Colorado about the new arrival of the endangered baby western gorilla. Kokamo, a 22-year old western gorilla, gave birth to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s first gorilla since October 2000. The baby, born at 9 pm on June 17, 2011, is the fifth offspring for Kokamo, who arrived at the Park from the Oklahoma City Zoo in March 2010. This is the 7th offspring for the troop’s silverback. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park now has 6 western gorillas, a species listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. A newborn gorilla grows quickly and can be expected to learn to walk on its own by six months, and by 18 months of age it can follow Mom on foot for short distances. Gorillas have been known to nurse for up to three years. About the San Diego Zoo Safari Park The 1800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park (historically referred to as Wild Animal Park) is operated by the not-for-profit San Diego Zoo and includes a 900-acre native species reserve. The organization focuses on conservation and research work around the globe, educates about wildlife and maintains accredited horticultural, animal, library and photo collections. The Zoo also manages the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.

Gorilla Track Experience

January 29th, 2012 by Hunting Tree Stands

default Gorilla Track Experience

Bwindi National Park (Uganda) is one of the two protected areas in the whole world where you can find Mountain Gorillas. On august 2011 we had the chance to get the permits and go to Bwindi to do the Gorilla Track. In our case, we walked for almost two hours to find the Gorillas and we stayed with them for an hour, that’s the time all the tourists groups normally have. A Gorilla track team is composed by the guide, the trackers, the escort, the porters and the tourists. There are 10 Gorilla families habituated to human presence in Bwindi NP: 9 destined to tourism, 1 for research. We track on the Ruhija sector in the Park. The gorilla family we tracked was composed of 10 gorillas leaded by Ndahura, the silverback. Gorilla track permit price: 500$ *** Canon HF S11

Gorilla Attack Big Male Oldest First born in captivity Upright

January 28th, 2012 by Hunting Tree Stands

Gorila Video shows a large male silverback gorilla on the attack. He first knocks gently on the door to another gorillas chamber. When no one answers, he flings himself against the glass at the visitors in a spectacular display. He then beats his chest. He is knocking on the chamber of Colo, who is the world’s first gorilla born in captivity and the oldest known gorilla. She is an amazing world record holder for many additional reasons. Colo gave birth to Emmy, the first second-generation gorilla born in captivity and became a grandmother when Cora, the first third-generation gorilla, was captive born. In addition, for ten years, Colo’s grandsons, Mosuba and Macombo II, were the only gorilla twins born in the western hemisphere! Colo is also the great grandmother of Timu, the first surviving gorilla conceived by artificial insemination. The 2011Guinness World Records book shows that Colo is the world’s oldest gorilla at 53 years old. She lives at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. She holds many more amazing records. Mac is her son, thus, a part of this record breaking family. He is a handsome gorilla **These are western lowland gorillas (gorilla gorilla). The adult males are very colorful with silver backs and red top hair. The gorilla (gorilla gorilla) is the largest of all living primates. These African apes are divided into two species and 4 or 5 subspecies. Their DNA is 97-98% identical to that of humans and they are considered the next closest relative after the chimpanzee
